Birth details

Without a time, we check your entire birth day and show all possible results.

How we calculate your Nakshatra

We convert the Gregorian date and local civil time to UTC using the city’s historical time zone. Do not subtract daylight saving time yourself. Repeated times require a choice of UTC offset; nonexistent times are rejected rather than silently corrected.

The Moon’s geocentric longitude is calculated with Astronomy Engine. We use an approximation to the Lahiri ayanamsha with date-dependent precession. This is neither a full Vedic chart nor a topocentric calculation; the details show the adjustment used.

The 360° sidereal circle is divided into 27 mansions of 13°20′, each with four padas of 3°20′. Each pada’s nuance follows its navamsa sign, not a universal meaning for every “pada 1”. Rahu and Ketu are lunar nodes, not physical planets.

A conservative margin of ±0.04° includes neighbouring mansions or padas near boundaries. It does not cover errors in the birth time you provide. Without a time, we examine every actual moment of the local date, including 23- and 25-hour days, without assigning a fictional birth time.

We use 27 nakshatras, excluding Abhijit. Spellings may vary. Names, order and symbols follow Drik Panchang. The interpretations are our own texts inspired by this tradition.

Your Nakshatra: another way to discover your Moon

In Indian astrology, your birth nakshatra is one of the 27 mansions of the sidereal zodiac. Names such as Ashwini, Rohini, Hasta and Revati describe sectors occupied by the Moon, not a star drawn at random. With the same birth details and method, the result stays the same.

What is a lunar mansion?

The twelve signs span 30° each; the 27 nakshatras span 13°20′ each. They describe the same lunar position at different scales. “Birth star” is a traditional name: these equal astrological sectors do not match the exact boundaries of modern constellations.

Reading your result

Your nakshatra comes with a symbol and ruler, a strength, something to watch for and a practical suggestion. The sidereal Moon sign is calculated in the same zodiac. Rahu and Ketu are lunar nodes, even though they appear alongside planets in the ruler list.

What does the pada mean?

Each mansion has four quarters of 3°20′. These 108 padas correspond to navamsa signs: Ashwini’s first pada is Aries, while Bharani’s first is Leo. The interpretation therefore follows the actual sign, not a universal meaning of “pada 1”. It is a nuance, not a second complete chart or a replacement for your Sun sign.

Why your time and city matter

The Moon can change pada or mansion during a day. Your city converts the recorded local time to UTC using historical clock changes. Do not adjust daylight saving time yourself. A manual birthplace needs the correct time zone, not coordinates, because this calculation is geocentric.

What if I do not know the time?

Select the unknown-time option. The whole local date is assessed, including clock-change days. If more than one result is possible, all are shown rather than inventing a birth time. Near a boundary, the ±0.04° calculation margin may also produce alternatives. It does not cover errors in your recorded birth time.

Lahiri and the sidereal zodiac

This calculator uses an approximate Lahiri ayanamsha, adjusted for the birth date, to move from the tropical to the sidereal zodiac. Your Moon sign may therefore differ from a Western tropical chart. Compare the same time, zone and ayanamsha. The calculation details show the lunar position and adjustment.

The astronomy uses Astronomy Engine; names and symbols follow the 27-nakshatra tradition. Interpretations are original texts.
