BaZi: your Four Pillars

Your BaZi chart goes beyond your birth-year animal

You may already know whether you were born in a Dragon, Horse or Snake year. But that animal describes only part of your birth calendar. BaZi, also called the Four Pillars, brings together year, month, day and hour in a chart of eight characters.

This calculator lets you explore each pillar and discover the symbol at the centre of the reading: your Day Master. You do not need to know Chinese characters. Each appears with its name, element and an explanation in English.

What are the Four Pillars?

Each pillar contains a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. The stems combine Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water with yin and yang. The branches relate to the twelve Chinese zodiac animals. Together they form a cycle of sixty pairs.

• Year: roots, origins and belonging.
• Month: surroundings, the solar season and how you find your place.
• Day: the centre of the reading and close relationships.
• Hour: your inner world, aspirations and projects that mature over time.

These are symbolic associations, not four compartments that determine your life. Select a pillar to read it individually while keeping the whole chart in view.

The Day Master: your starting point

Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your birth day, not simply your year. Two people with the same Chinese animal sign can have different Day Masters.

The ten stems use natural images: a tree and a flexible plant for Wood; the sun and a flame for Fire; a mountain and cultivated soil for Earth; a tool and a jewel for Metal; a river and rain for Water. Each reading offers a strength, a tendency to notice and a practical idea to reflect on.

Reading the five-element graph

The graph shows how often each element appears in the confirmed characters. Four complete pillars total eight; without the time, usually six. Each stem contributes its element and each branch its main element.

It is not a percentage of personality or good luck. The most frequent element is not necessarily the most favourable. A fuller traditional study also considers the season, relationships between characters and hidden stems. The latter appear in the details but are not added to the bars.

A zero means that an element is absent from this visible count, not that you cannot express its symbolic qualities.

Why we ask for your birth city and time

Year and month boundaries follow solar terms. Li Chun starts the year used here and does not necessarily coincide with Lunar New Year. Each transition must be compared with the birth time converted to UTC.

Your city supplies its historical time zone. Enter the local time on your birth record; the calculator handles clock changes. If a time occurred twice, you can choose the appropriate offset. This version uses civil time without a solar-longitude correction.

What if I do not know the time?

Tick the corresponding box and continue. The hour pillar stays open. If the solar year or month changed on that date, the affected pillars also remain unconfirmed, with both possibilities shown. We do not fill your chart with a randomly chosen time.

Why might another calculator give a different result?

Compare the methods first: civil or solar time, exact solar-term instants, and whether the day changes at 23:00 or 00:00. Here we keep the civil day until midnight, using the Zi-hour convention explained below the tool. Method differences can change a pillar, especially near these boundaries.
