Correct answers are saved separately for each mode. Review runes with an accuracy below 75%.
Progress and your game are saved in this browser. This game uses modern symbolic associations; it is not a historical translation test.
Learn to recognize runes by playing
The Rune Riddle lets you practise the symbols of the Elder Futhark and their modern associations. Choose between recognizing a meaning and interpreting a short situation.
Two modes, one answer per round
Recognize shows a rune with three possible meanings. Interpret gives you a short scene and three runes. Choose the best match to reveal the answer and its explanation. If you get it wrong, you will also see what your choice represents.
There are 96 original exercises: 48 recognition questions and 48 situations. A normal game of 10 or 20 questions never repeats its featured rune. In free practice, all 24 appear before the next cycle, alternating their two exercises.
Your notebook and mistake review
Each correct answer earns 100 points. There is no timer or penalty for taking your time. Your notebook keeps separate results for each mode, alongside each rune’s name and an association.
Review focuses on runes with an accuracy below 75% in the chosen mode. If only a few need work, the session is shorter; review in free practice is limited to ten. At the end, you can also revisit the runes you missed in that game.
Close the page and you can resume from the last saved point. Progress stays in this browser, not an account: it does not sync across devices and may disappear if you clear site data. This rune notebook is not yet included in the general tarot backup.
Which runes are included?
The game uses 24 Elder Futhark signs, from Fehu to Othala, without a blank rune or reversals. They were originally writing characters. The Swedish History Museum explains that the early alphabet had 24 signs and was reduced to 16 by the Viking Age.
Associations such as protection, growth and intuition belong to modern symbolic readings. The scenes practise that convention: they are not ancient translations or personal predictions. Other authors may interpret a rune differently.
