Pisces in love

Pisces is the sign most often called romantic, which is accurate and not entirely a compliment. Being loved by a fish can be the tenderest experience of your life. It can also mean being loved as a slightly improved version of yourself that you will spend years failing to live up to.

Both things come from the same source. This sign feels first, imagines immediately afterwards, and only much later gets around to checking the facts.

The person it invented

Within about a fortnight, a Pisces has built a complete picture of who you are and what the two of you will become. It is generous, detailed and largely fictional — assembled from a few real signals and a great deal of hope. For a while this is wonderful to be on the receiving end of. Nobody has ever thought so well of you.

The reckoning comes when the real person interrupts the portrait: you are late, you are dull on Wednesdays, you do not want to talk about your childhood. A fish does not usually make a scene about the discrepancy. It goes quiet and sad, and cannot always explain what has been lost, because the thing being mourned was never actually there.

The remedy is unromantic and works: be extremely, repetitively literal about who you are and what you want. A Pisces that is told the plain facts often enough will love the real person, and love them better than most. It simply will not arrive at them unaided.

Empathy without a wall

This sign picks up mood the way a room picks up damp. It knows you had a bad meeting before you have taken your coat off. Where that becomes a problem is that it does not distinguish between your feelings and its own — your terrible week becomes its terrible week, absorbed whole, and then there are two people underwater instead of one.

So a fish needs something most partners never think to give: permission to not be affected. Told outright that your mood is not its fault and not its job, a Pisces can put it down. Left to itself, it will carry your weather around for days and quietly conclude that it has failed you.

The exits it uses

Confrontation is unbearable here, so this sign disappears instead — and it has several ways of doing it.

• Agreeing to something it has no intention of doing, to end the conversation.
• Becoming vague, unreachable, mysteriously busy for a week.
• Rewriting history so that nothing was ever actually promised.
• In the bad cases, drinking, or a new person appearing before the old one has been told anything.

The kindest thing you can do — and the most effective — is to make small honest conversations completely safe. A Pisces vanishes because it expects the truth to cause a catastrophe. Prove three or four times that it does not and the vanishing largely stops.

Rescue, and its price

Watch who a fish falls for. Very often it is somebody in trouble, because being needed is the version of love it trusts most and being useful is how it earns its place. It will give money it does not have, time it cannot spare and patience nobody deserves, and it will call all of it devotion.

The bill arrives eventually. A Pisces that has given everything and been taken for granted does not negotiate; it slips out of the relationship altogether, usually to the astonishment of a partner who never heard a single complaint. If you love one, watch for the complaints it is not making, because those are the only ones that matter.

What it is superb at

Forgiving without keeping score. Sitting with somebody in the worst hour of their life and saying nothing useful and being exactly what was needed. Noticing the small unspoken thing. Making a Tuesday feel like something. There is no sign better at the intimate, unglamorous work of making another person feel less alone.

And it is braver than it looks. A fish will stay in a difficult situation long past the point where tougher-seeming signs would have gone, not out of weakness but because it can hold two things at once — the disappointment and the affection — without needing to resolve them into a verdict.

Who steadies it

Cancer and Scorpio understand it without translation, and neither asks it to be more rational than it is. Taurus and Capricorn are the useful matches — earth gives a fish edges, routine and a floor under its feet, which sounds unromantic and is the reason those relationships last decades.

Virgo, its opposite, is the most instructive pairing in the zodiac: the one who imagines and the one who verifies, each holding half of what the other lacks. It works when the fish stops calling precision coldness and the Virgo stops calling intuition nonsense. Gemini and Sagittarius are harder — both are quick, both are frank, and neither notices the small wounds a Pisces will not mention.
