A Ouija board is a talking board with letters, numbers and short responses. Participants rest their fingers on a movable pointer, often called a planchette, and read the characters it passes over. Its appeal lies in the feeling that the answer is arriving from somewhere outside the group.

The alphabet gives the pointer a way to spell words. Numbers allow dates or quantities, while yes and no provide short answers. The small pointer makes separate movements appear to form a continuous message. The diagram above shows this structure, not a working supernatural device.
Why the pointer can move
Small movements can happen without a person consciously deciding to make them. This is known as an ideomotor effect. When several people touch the same pointer, its movement can feel surprising even though hands are supplying the motion. A board with a history
Commercial talking boards became popular during the late nineteenth century, alongside interest in spiritualism. The familiar explanation that the name simply combines French “oui” and German “ja” is not an established account of its origin; the stories surrounding the name are more complicated. Keep the experience in perspective
If you explore a board as a game, everyone should be comfortable stopping. A frightening word is not evidence of a threat, a spirit or a prediction. Do not use the board to make medical, financial or relationship decisions. Its most interesting question may be why an unexpected movement can feel so convincing.
