Graphology

Symbols at a glance

Look at the writing, not a diagnosis

Form

Notice the size, spacing and shape of the letters.

Context

A pen, a surface, tiredness or haste can change the same handwriting.

Limits

Handwriting does not reliably reveal personality or prove honesty.

Graphology is the practice of interpreting handwriting as a clue to personality. It can be interesting as a tradition of symbolic reading, but a handwriting sample is not a reliable personality test.

What you can actually observe

Start with visible features: how large the letters are, how much space separates the words, whether the writing leans, and how the lines sit on the page. Describe those features before attaching a meaning to them. “The words are close together” is an observation; “the writer fears being alone” is a claim that the observation does not establish.

Try a simple comparison

  1. Write the same short sentence slowly, then at your usual speed.
  2. Try a different pen or a less comfortable writing surface.
  3. Compare the spacing, size and shapes. Notice what changes while the writer remains the same person.

This is an exercise in looking carefully, not a test with a hidden score. You can keep the samples in a journal or use them as inspiration for lettering.

What handwriting cannot establish

Do not use letter shapes to decide whether somebody is trustworthy, suitable for a job or hiding an illness. Research comparing graphological assessments with personality measures has not supported the claimed ability to measure personality reliably. See Dazzi and Pedrabissi’s study of graphology and personality.

A useful question

Instead of asking “What does this prove about me?”, ask “What do I notice about the way I write, and what would I like to make clearer?” That keeps the exercise grounded in something you can actually explore.
