How to read this Grand Tableau
All 36 cards, once each. They are shuffled into four rows of nine. Changing the theme does not change the deal. Reversed cards are not used.
Cards and houses are different. A card’s number identifies its symbol. Its house is its position: the first is the Rider’s house, the second the Clover’s, and so on to the Cross. For example, the Heart in the Ship’s house links love with distance or new horizons.
One starting point for each theme. Love starts at the Heart (24); work at the Anchor (35); money at the Fish (34); home at the House (4). If you chose a personal figure, you can also explore the cards surrounding it.
Neighbours add nuance. Immediately adjacent cards are shown, including diagonals. The summary uses two: left and right first, then above and below when either is missing. Edge cards have fewer neighbours: the reading never wraps into the next row.
Mirrors offer a second perspective. In the detail view you can see the mirrored card in the same row and column. Distant mirrors do not count as neighbours. In the central column there is no separate horizontal mirror.
A layered reading, not a calendar. This adaptation uses houses, proximity and mirrors. It assigns no dates, percentages or fixed destiny. Positions are not automatically labelled as past or future.
Using a keyboard. Tab enters the tableau; arrow keys move between cards. Home and End go to the row’s ends. Enter opens the details. “Back to tableau” returns focus to the selected card.

The Lenormand Grand Tableau: all 36 cards in one spread
A short reading tells a scene. The Grand Tableau opens the whole deck to connect different areas of life. The Heart beside the House does not read like the Heart beside the Ship: the symbol keeps its meaning, but its surroundings change the story.
This application uses our 36 original illustrations in four rows of nine. Start with love, work, money or home, then explore the other themes without changing a single card. There is no need to write a question or memorise the deck.
What does a card’s house mean?
The houses are the tableau’s 36 fixed positions, following the order of the symbols from Rider to Cross. The card tells you what appears; the house provides the area in which it is expressed. The Heart in the Ship’s house, for example, connects love with distance, travel or a wish to broaden your horizons. The Ring nearby adds commitment; the Mountain introduces a difficulty in drawing closer. These are symbolic associations, not evidence of what another person thinks or does.
How to explore without getting lost
- Choose a theme. Its reference card is located and its house gives you a starting reading.
- Look at the neighbours. They are highlighted in green. Two nearby connections are explained beneath the board; expand the details to explore them all.
- Tap another card. See its larger image, house and connections. On mobile you can enlarge the tableau or find a card by name.
- Return to the whole. Compare themes in the same spread. One difficult card does not sum up everything.
Choosing the Man or the Woman
Cards 28 and 29 have traditionally served as reference figures. Here you may freely choose either, or neither. Choosing one adds “Your card”, showing its surroundings. It does not change the random deal or automatically make the other figure a partner.
Does this reading give dates?
No weeks, months or dates are assigned to positions. Grand Tableau traditions include other layouts, such as eight cards per row with four below. This adaptation focuses on houses, neighbours and mirrors. Its method is explained within the application.
