Two people can share a zodiac sign and still express it very differently. Zodiac decans offer one traditional explanation: each sign contains three ten-degree sections that add a particular nuance to its character.
What is a zodiac decan?
The zodiac wheel contains 360 degrees. Each of its twelve signs spans 30 degrees and can be divided into three ten-degree sections: the first, second and third decan. This creates 36 zodiac nuances.
Your sign does not change. The decan adds a second tone: the first intensifies the sign’s core nature, while the second and third receive the influence of the other signs that share its element.
The three decans
| Decan | Degrees | Symbolic reading |
|---|---|---|
| First | 0°–9°59′ | The sign’s essential nature and main ruler. |
| Second | 10°–19°59′ | A nuance from another sign of the same element. |
| Third | 20°–29°59′ | The element is completed by its third sign. |

Why do some sources show different rulers?
There is more than one system. Hellenistic and medieval astrology uses planetary “faces” in a traditional sequence; much modern astrology uses elemental triplicities. This calculator states clearly that it follows the second model so the two interpretations are not mixed.
How to read your result
Read the sign as the foundation and the co-ruler as an accent. The result combines them across personality, gift, challenge, love and purpose. Astrology is a symbolic language rather than a scientific diagnostic or prediction method; use this reading for reflection and entertainment.
