Tasseography is the art of interpreting the shapes left by coffee grounds inside a cup. The custom spread from Turkey and the Balkans: after drinking, the cup is swirled, turned over onto its saucer and left to rest before its walls are examined. How to read your coffee grounds

The rim, wall and bottom of the cup

In tasseography, where a shape appears matters as much as the shape itself. The rim speaks of the near future and what is beginning to show. The wall represents events already in motion. The bottom points to deeper matters, slower developments and what has not yet become clear.

Its position in relation to the handle adds another layer: it may show something close to you, an outside influence, something coming into your life or something starting to move away. This is why the same symbol does not tell exactly the same story in every cup.
